CrystalWalk AR is an educational platform for the teaching and learning of crystal structures through augmented reality. Built as an extension of the original CrystalWalk project, it was developed to address persistent challenges in crystallography education, especially the difficulty of understanding three-dimensional structures through static images and conventional teaching tools.
The project uses the Microsoft HoloLens holographic computing platform and was developed with Unity and Vuforia. Through the use of SmartTags, CrystalWalk AR allows crystal structures generated from CrystalWalk to be placed, manipulated, and explored in an immersive holographic environment.
Understanding crystal structures requires strong three-dimensional spatial reasoning, yet many of the concepts involved are not easily conveyed through textbooks or traditional classroom models. CrystalWalk AR was created to provide a more intuitive and immersive way for students and instructors to interact with crystal structures, lattice representations, motifs, unit cells, and crystalline defects.
By moving beyond the limits of a two-dimensional screen, the platform enables users to display, enlarge, translate, and rotate holographic crystal models directly within the physical environment. This creates a richer learning experience and helps bridge the gap between abstract crystallographic concepts and spatial understanding.
CrystalWalk AR was designed not simply as a technology demonstration, but as a practical educational tool to improve how crystal structures are taught, explored, and discussed in science and engineering contexts.
