Understanding materials through visualization, interaction, and digital innovation

The Group for Scientific Visualization in Materials, GVCM, is a research group based at the Center for Materials Science and Technology, CCTM, at IPEN/CNEN, in connection with the University of São Paulo. Founded in 2009, the group was created to advance how complex materials science concepts are studied, explored, and communicated through visualization, computing, and interdisciplinary research.

GVCM works at the intersection of materials science, computer graphics, scientific visualization, geometric modeling, and interactive technologies. Our goal is to develop methods, tools, and digital experiences that make complex scientific structures and phenomena easier to understand for researchers, educators, and students.

Research Focus

Our research is centered on the application of visualization and computation to both fundamental and practical challenges in materials science. Main areas of work include:

  • Materials Science
  • Nuclear Science & Technology
  • Scientific visualization
  • Software visualization
  • Multiscale shape analysis
  • Computer & Vector graphics
  • Science and engineering education

These areas allow us to bridge research, education, and innovation through digital tools that improve analysis, communication, and learning.

Education and Collaboration

GVCM has a strong commitment to STEM education and to building an open, collaborative environment where students, professors, and researchers can work together across disciplines. We believe that better visual and interactive tools can improve scientific understanding, support teaching, and create more engaging learning experiences.

Mission

Our mission is to develop and disseminate research and innovation that improve the understanding of material characteristics, structures, and properties through scientific visualization and related digital approaches. This includes creating practical tools, educational resources, and new forms of interaction that connect scientific rigor with accessibility.

Vision

Our vision is to strengthen GVCM as a technical and scientific reference in the field of scientific visualization for materials research and education. We aim to create an environment where multidisciplinary collaboration supports both scientific excellence and individual growth.
